I believe that’s what experts call a “bad life choice” or “bad financial decision.”
Should be fun, they’re actually decent cars, just do your own work, and get parts from a specialist (FCP Euro, Motorcars) or from the UK to keep costs down .
Most of the issues with those cars are brittle plastics - they’re not terrible to work on and issues tend to be more annoying (like a window falls of the track or a door handle stops working) rather than drivetrain .
If it’s an early car, you probably want to see if it’s potentially got tensioner issues - IIRC the R’s had the upgrade from new, but some of the early V8s (before early 2001) had tensioners that would go brittle, fail and grenade the valves.

Yea you do trust me. It pretty much had typical Jag problems everyone tried to warm me about. https://oppositelock.kinja.com/the-time-i-bought-a-jaguar-s-type-r-and-got-rid-of-it-i-1682716216

Wow that sucks! Sounds a little like my Land Rover purchase. Ended up with blown head gaskets and still not sure how long the transmission is going to last. That said, your story actually makes me feel a little better.
Sort of suspecting I could get into a world of hurt (The first one of these I looked at wouldn’t start and had a gear 3-4 slip code) I came in with a Jaguar specific OBDII scanner and made sure to check all the ECUs (especially the transmission) for DTCs. I also brought a OBDII gauge cluster so I could keep an eye on the actual engine temperature, not just what the gauge was telling me as I assumed it is software controlled and about as useful as the one in the Landy (when it moves off the middle, your heads are already cracked) .
Is the car perfect? OH DEAR GOD NO! Needs tires, alignment , probably some work to the front end, and a bunch of other stuff I don’t want to think about... but my threshold for pain is pretty high and for what I paid I’m happy with it.
I guess we get to see if it starts tomorrow!

Technically it was my reward for signing on with Company B, but by the time I’d changed my mind and switched to C, plans had been set in motion to go get the car and I decided to go with it. A minor risk, but one I was willing to take.

Well at least you came more prepared than I did. I wish I would’ ve had the scanner. But since your pain threshold is high, Im here for whatever updates you got. The S Type R is a rare gem that’ s fantasia when it works properly. Try and enjoy that engine and not think about the coming(hope not) bad stuff.

Nice. Looking forward to hearing more about both the job and this new project as they progress.
